Today I am looking at another knife from Schrade‘s “X-Timer” Series, the Schrade X-Timer Camp Knife. The knife gets its name from the long sweeping belly of the blade, a design primarily for chopping, an activity you do a fair amount of while camping.
The balance of the knife favors the forward part of the blade, which again lends itself to chopping tasks, and performs something like a small axe. With a blade just under 7″ the XT1B is very versatile. It can be used for detail tasks and food preparation as well as heavy chopping.
The knife is made of 440C stainless steel. 440C is a hard steel capable of keeping a good edge, which is critical if you are going to use this knife on logs of any appreciable size. It won’t be the easiest steel to sharpen (the curved blade doesn’t help) but once you get it right it will hold the edge very well.
An obvious and very distinctive feature of this knife is the large sawback. Most knives featuring a sawback do it for aesthetic reasons. Here however, the saw actually works. It’s got pretty big teeth so it really tears apart what you are cutting, but it will work as a saw in a pinch. I think this is a pretty nice feature, it might save you packing a saw (or going back to your truck to get the saw you packed).
This knife comes with a heavy nylon sheath. It is sturdy, and functional. It’s not a super fine sheath, but it will get the job done and I think it’s appropriate given the price and purpose of the knife. All in all this is a very capable camp knife that would serve well in a variety of scenarios.
